Earlier this year, in March, I took a week off to enjoy the nice weather after a long winter. This was one of my planned weeks off for unplanned activities. I decided to drive over to Virginia to enjoy a few of my favorite activities: Off-Roading and Camping.

After few hours of research, I figured that George Washington & Jefferson National Forest would be a great place to explore for this trip. A few interesting things below on George Washington & Jefferson National Forest:

  • Over 1.8 million acres
  • Over 2,200 miles of trails, including a portion of the Appalachian Trail.
  • You can camp anywhere unless otherwise noted
  • The forest includes Mount Rogers, Virginia’s highest peak at 5,729 feet.
  • Flagpole Knob is a famous off-road challenge.
  • Thousands of miles of roads, from maintained gravel paths to rugged, unpaved routes.
  • Scenic drives and access to primitive camping everywhere.

onX Offroad was really helpful for planning my route every day. I paid for a 1 month subscription so I could have access to offline maps and know exactly where all the interesting trails were. Most of the time in the National Forest I did not have signal so onX came in Clutch!

I took me about 9 hours to drive to Virigina. I’m a big fan of road trips and since the weather was nice, it was a great drive! Once I arrived to the National Forest, I dropped my tire pressure to 20 PSI and got going!

This was my camping setup:

Every Morning, I made some fresh coffee and prepared myself some scrambled eggs with cheese and some locally made ham that I purchased at a local shop. Shout out to Fulks Run Grocery

For Dinner, after my day of adventure, I would make myself a nice burger and typically I would enjoy it sitting by a fire I made. Such a wonderful feeling to make your own fire. I’m learning to use the ferrule rod along with wood shavings for kindling. Takes a while and makes my hands hurt but so rewarding.

While exploring the roads this national forest had to offer, I had to stop every once in a while, and take a moment to appreciate the beauty of it all. Here some images of the journey.

And finally, some more pictures that I thought would be nice to share!

This trip was a wonderful experience! I never knew where I would end up the following day and at the end of every road a new adventure awaited. Next time I will take more images and videos of the fun off-roading parts. I almost got stuck a few times and also had to cut parts off of a fallen tree that had blocked off the road in the middle of the night. I live for the adventure and never knowing what to expect exploring new areas.

I also just bought myself a little action camera that I will be able to use in my following adventures. Looking forward to sharing more adventures here!
